Nice write-up! I am looking at the same error for Exchange 2007 SP2!!! I have to wonder if this 'bug' is more of an issue with the setup of exchange within the org? I know that our exchange servers sit on a child domain, but we are running the /preparead and /prepareschema on the Forest-wide Schema Master without error. Our server is continuously giving us the error listed above and we are using the baked in Exchange 2007 sp2 installer!

Has anyone had this issue with the sp2 install as well?
